The Deep Un-Regarded River of Our Life: Creativity & Uncertainty
Creativity is important because it casts us into uncertainty. Life is uncertain. So. Through creativity we grasp at the life force. Death is certain. When we grasp at habits, routines, or stay exclusively within the frame of existing logic we grasp at death. And yet, while creative individuals do express a desire to grasp at the life force by examining that which they do not understand, they also struggle with the uncertainty associated with such acts. The lecture will examine uncertainty as vital to creative acts, and also provide ways for thinking about and managing the uncertainty that often plagues creative minds.

Vital Ambiguity: Thoughts on the Power of Ambiguity
It could be said that a successful artwork is one where the different strands of interpretation – ie: the ambiguities - add up, multiply or complement one another, (not unlike Aristotle's "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts") as opposed to subtracting from or detracting from one another. Nevertheless, as creative individuals we must often consider the difference between productive ambiguity and ambiguity that dilutes the power of a poetic expression. The lecture will consider both forms and provide means for considering the power of ambiguity.

The Artist as Maker vs. the Artist as Vessel
Earlier civilizations viewed the artist as a vessel by which human beings could communicate emotions, which were considered the ultimate origin point of art. Over subsequent centuries, an idea of the artist as the ultimate authority and point of origin has coalesced into the trope of the "tortured artist" toiling to plumb the depths of the soul. This leaves an essential question: do we make art, or do we channel art? What are the implications for the creative process?
